Milica Stojanovic is a Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University. She is also a permanent Guest Investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

Professor Stojanovic graduated from the University of Belgrade, Serbia, in 1988 (summa cum laude), and received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, in 1991 and 1993. Upon graduation, she was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and subsequently a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Research Scholarship. Professor Stojanovic spent a considerable part of her research career as a Principal Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she worked at the AUV Laboratory and served as an Associate Director for Research at MIT Sea Grant College Program. A Distinguished Visitor Award took her to the University of Padova, Italy, where she taught for a semester during 2006. In 2008, Professor Stojanovic joined the faculty of Northeastern University.

Professor Stojanovic’s research interests include digital communications theory, statistical signal processing and wireless networks, and their applications to underwater acoustic systems. Her teaching career spans over twenty years, with traditional as well as newly developed courses in these areas. She has made pioneering contributions to underwater acoustic communications, and her work has been widely cited. Professor Stojanovic is an IEEE Fellow (2010, for contributions to underwater acoustic communications), a recipient of the IEEE Ocean Engineering Society’s Distinguished Technical Achievement Award (2015), IEEE Ocean Engineering Society’s Distinguished Lectureship (2018), IEEE WICE Outstanding Achievement Award (2019), and the and IEEE Communications Society’s Stars in Computer Networking and Communications Award (2023). She is a member of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia and holds an honorary doctorate from the Aarhus University in Denmark. In 2020, students of the ECE Department at Northeastern University selected her as the Eta Kappa Nu Professor of the Year. Professor Stojanovic is an Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering and has also served on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, Vehicular Technology, Communication Letters and Signal Processing Magazine. She is the Chair of the IEEE Ocean Engineering Society’s Technology Committee for Underwater Communication and Navigation.
